Kilkari Inspired Me to Pursue a Career as a Frontline Health Worker

Puja Verma, a 25-year-old from Raipur District, Chhattisgarh, diligently listened to every Kilkari call during her pregnancy, adhering to the guidance provided. The valuable information from these calls contributed to a safe pregnancy and delivery for her. Motivated by her positive experience and the desire to assist other women in achieving similar outcomes, Puja applied to become an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) in Chhattisgarh. During the village selection committee interview, Puja drew upon the knowledge gained from the Kilkari calls to answer questions effectively. Her proficiency in maternal and child health, derived from the programme, played a crucial role in her selection as an ASHA. Reflecting on her journey, Puja expresses, “The Kilkari programme not only supported me during pregnancy and child care but also inspired me to embark on a career as a frontline health worker. I am now helping other pregnant women, mothers, and their children in adopting healthy behaviour to ensure their well-being.” The Kilkari programme provides critical preventive care information during pregnancy and infancy via timed and targeted recorded voice calls sent directly to the phones of the women enrolled in the programme. It is the largest mobile-based maternal messaging program in the world implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
